Prominent Ghanaian legal figure and Human Rights Advocate Akoto Ampaw passes away at 70

Akoto Ampaw, one of Ghana’s most respected private legal practitioners, human rights activists, and anti-corruption campaigners, has passed away.

He is reported to have died at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) on October 20, 2023.

The cause of his death is not yet clear.

Akoto Ampaw was widely known for his involvement in high-profile legal cases, including serving as the lead lawyer for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the 2020 election petition.

He was also a member of the New Patriotic Party’s legal team in the Electoral Petition of 2013.

Affectionately known as “Che Che” from his student days at the University of Ghana, Akoto Ampaw was a partner in Akufo-Addo’s law firm, Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co.

He had an impeccable legacy in the legal fraternity, championing human rights campaigns and advocating for fair justice.

He was a graduate of the University of Ghana, with an LL.B. in 1973, and the Ghana School of Law, with a B.L. in 1993.

His legal practice covered areas such as Commercial Law, Company Law, Industrial Law, and Litigation, among others.
