Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong, has issued a directive to allocate $40 million in World Bank support funding to assist farmers in the Volta Region who have suffered losses due to the Akosombo Dam spillage.
Mr. Acheampong expressed his intention to use these funds to help restore the livelihoods of farmers who have been severely affected by the spillage.
He made this announcement during the launch of the Youth In Agric initiative under the job module of the Youth Employment Agency.
He stated, “To our friends, brothers, and family in the Volta and eastern regions affected by the Akosombo Dam’s actions, we have all witnessed the devastation caused by the necessary actions taken by the Volta River Authority (VRA) to protect the Akosombo Dam. Consequently, numerous farmers have been adversely affected, with many of them losing their entire crops.”
“In response to this emergency situation, I have directed that $40 million from the World Bank-funded Food Systems Resilience Programme be restructured to provide assistance to farmers whose crops have been devastated due to the necessary measures taken by the VRA to safeguard us all.”
