The government has formed a 13-member inter-ministerial committee to address issues related to the flood caused by the Akosombo dam spillage.
The committee, chaired by the Chief of Staff, comprises members from various ministries, including National Security, Interior, Defence, Energy, Finance, Local Government, Works and Housing, Roads and Highways, Environment, Sanitation, Lands and Natural Resources, and Information.
This committee was established on the directive of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in response to the flooding caused by the dam spillage, particularly affecting communities like Mepe and Battor in the North Tongu Constituency.
The Vola River Authority (VRA) has indicated that the spillage of water from the Akosombo dam will continue until excess inflows in the lake recede.
The VRA CEO, Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa, explained that they are experiencing higher-than-expected inflows into the lake, necessitating the continued spillage of water to safeguard the dam.
The committee’s role is to address the flood-related issues and provide necessary support to those affected by the spillage.
The VRA had previously faced criticism for its handling of responsibilities in the Lower Volta Basin, leading to significant flood impacts on communities due to dam spillages.
