PURC intensifies efforts to educate students on electricity tariffs and conservation

The Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) has intensified its efforts to educate students on tariffs, with a focus on electricity consumption estimators.

This campaign aims to assist consumers and stakeholders in using electricity more efficiently.

Dr. Ishmael Ackah, the Executive Secretary of PURC, engaged with students of Wesco Training College as part of a series of programs involving all stakeholders, including students, to educate the public about tariffs and gather their perspectives.

Dr. Ackah explained that this initiative would enable consumers to manage their electricity consumption effectively and promote efficiency and conservation.

The students received theoretical knowledge on calculating electricity and water consumption using the PURC Tariff Reckoner, along with practical examples and case studies to understand the complexities of determining utility tariffs.

During the engagement, Dr. Ishmael Ackah also highlighted the adverse effects of illegal mining activities on water production by the Ghana Water Company Limited.

He pointed out that the destruction caused by these activities on water bodies results in higher water treatment costs and, subsequently, elevated water tariffs.

Dr. Ackah called for a halt to illegal mining activities to protect water bodies and reduce production costs.

The students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn directly from PURC, gaining insights into critical aspects of Ghana’s utility sector.

They felt more confident in understanding tariff-related issues and expressed their willingness to actively participate in future discussions on the subject.
