
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, has commended the government’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy for providing an opportunity for more than 1.4 million students to access secondary education.
He highlighted the achievements of the initiative, including improving gender balance in secondary education and expanding access for students.
Dr. Adutwum expressed his pride in being part of the journey of the Free SHS policy during his remarks at the formal launch of the National Service Scheme at 50 (NSS@50), which took place at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
The Education Minister noted that over the past six years, the policy has significantly increased enrollment in secondary schools, with 1.4 million youth now able to access secondary education.
He also highlighted that the initiative has helped balance the gender ratio in secondary education, achieving equal numbers of girls and boys in senior high schools.
In addition to the success of the Free SHS policy, Dr. Adutwum discussed the government’s commitment to transforming Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
He emphasized that TVET is currently undergoing significant changes to enhance vocational skills and provide students with valuable practical training.
Furthermore, Dr. Adutwum pointed out that the government’s investment in constructing educational facilities across the country demonstrates its dedication to improving Ghana’s basic education system.
He praised these efforts as a significant step toward transforming public schools and enhancing the quality of education.
