Simon Opoku Afriyie, a journalist at Otec FM in Kumasi, has shown his support for schoolchildren in the Manso Muawano community in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region.
He donated educational materials such as exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, and mathematical sets to hundreds of pupils in the area.
Over the past three years, he has also supported elderly widows and widowers in Muawano in various ways, including organizing free health screenings for residents.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Opoku Afriyie expressed his desire to see the community of Manso Muawano produce brilliant students who can contribute to the development of the area and beyond.
He appealed to the government, the Member of Parliament for the area, Yaw Frimpong Addo, and the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the District, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, to help construct classroom blocks in the community.
Currently, students have to travel long distances to neighboring communities for education, which hampers learning in Muawano.
Mr. Opoku Afriyie also called on the government to provide mechanized boreholes to address the water crisis in the community. Currently, the community has only one functioning borehole, leading to long queues for water and causing schoolchildren to arrive late for school.
The beneficiaries, including pupils and parents, expressed their gratitude for the donations, and some urged other natives of Muawano who have the means to support their community as well.
Mr. Opoku Afriyie pledged to continue making donations to his community in the future.
