Former Cardiothoracic surgeon at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has expressed his support for the proposed new cost for dialysis treatment at the hospital, which is yet to be approved.
The Renal Dialysis Unit at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital recently announced an increase in the cost of dialysis sessions from GH¢380 to GHS¢765.42 per session.
This increase was met with opposition from some quarters, including the Minority Caucus in Parliament.
However, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng emphasized the financial challenges faced by hospitals like Korle Bu in procuring and maintaining advanced medical equipment required for treatments such as dialysis.
According to him, these machines come at a high cost and demand continuous maintenance and operational expenses.
He also noted that if the government cannot grant exemptions or reduce taxes on critical medical equipment, hospitals may have no choice but to pass on these expenses to patients.
