Perpetual Ofori Ampofo, the President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has called upon the government to consider including the treatment of kidney disease within the coverage of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
She highlighted the significant financial burden associated with kidney disease treatment, which often makes it unaffordable for patients. Including kidney disease treatment in the NHIS would provide much-needed support to patients in accessing healthcare.
Ofori Ampofo noted that the country faces challenges in addressing kidney disease and cited research indicating that one in ten medical ward admissions involves chronic kidney disease requiring expensive dialysis.
