A two-day technical seminar on leveraging digitalization to extend social security coverage in West Africa was held in Accra.
The seminar was hosted by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) under the auspices of the International Social Security Association (ISSA), an international organization for social security institutions and government departments.
The purpose of the seminar was to identify innovative solutions and practices in the use of digital and mobile technologies to expand social security coverage in the West African sub-region.
The Secretary-General of ISSA, Marcelo Abi-Ramia Caetano, expressed gratitude to Ghana for hosting the ISSA Liaison Office for the next three years and highlighted SSNIT’s commitment and leadership in social security administration.
The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, emphasized the need for digitalized procedures to simplify the social security registration process and bridge the coverage gap in the region.
He called on social security institutions in West Africa to leverage digital technologies to improve service delivery and access to social protection.
Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang, the Director-General of SSNIT, urged participants to focus on technology that positively impacts service delivery and access to social security.
He emphasized the importance of using technology and other interventions to increase social protection coverage for a broader segment of the population.
