The Accra Archdiocese Catholic Church organized a significant Catechist Formation event at the Archbishop Andoh Cathedral and Retreat Centre on Friday, September 29, 2023.
During a media address, Reverend Father Delight A. Cabornu emphasized that Vatican II has shifted the focus of the church from defending itself to encouraging the church to live out its core values.
He explained that this transformation should be reflected in how new members of the church are nurtured, which is the primary role of catechists.
He further elaborated that individuals aspiring to become catechists should not approach the role with a defensive mindset. Instead, they should focus on promoting the church’s values and spiritual growth.
Father Cabornu pointed out that there are no other churches that are fundamentally against the church, and those who criticize it often do so for popularity rather than genuine concerns.
Father Cabornu also stressed that if the church continually engages in defensive arguments, it might result in a back-and-forth exchange of words. Instead, the church should aim to yield spiritual fruits from its actions and teachings.
In closing, Reverend Father Delight A. Cabornu offered valuable advice to aspiring catechists. He emphasized that to be a catechist, one must first have a personal encounter with Jesus and a desire to share that experience with others.
He discouraged spiritual arrogance and urged catechists to submit themselves to Jesus Christ, allowing His guidance to shine through their work.
