Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has officially declared her candidacy for the position of Commonwealth General Secretary.
This announcement was made during a bilateral meeting with six foreign ministers representing Commonwealth countries at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
In outlining her priorities as a candidate, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey emphasized her commitment to harnessing the significant trade potential within the Commonwealth.
She believes that unlocking the 2 trillion dollars’ worth of trade opportunities among member states can greatly improve the living conditions of the youth across Africa, Asia, the Americas, and the Pacific.
The current General Secretary of the Commonwealth is Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, who has held this position since 2015 and hails from the Caribbean region.
It is now Africa’s turn to nominate a candidate for this prestigious role, and Ghana has put forward Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey as its candidate.
