A civil society group known as “Care For Free and Fair Election Ghana” has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of deliberately disenfranchising Ghanaians ahead of the 2024 general elections.
The group’s accusations come amid a heated debate surrounding the registration of voters for the upcoming elections.
The Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission, Dr. Serebuor Quaicoe, defended the EC’s position, emphasizing that the commission’s primary concern is protecting the sanctity of the voters’ register.
The EC has faced significant criticism for its decision to conduct voter registration exclusively at its district offices across the country, despite calls for a more widespread registration process at various centers for greater accessibility.
Dr. Serebuor Quaicoe asserted that those advocating for an extension of the limited voters’ registration to electoral areas are primarily interested in increasing the number of new registrants and not in ensuring the integrity of the voters’ register.
He argued that the district offices are better equipped to maintain a clean and accurate register.
In response to these developments, the Executive Director of Care For Free and Fair Election Ghana, Mr. David Kumi-Addo, urged the Electoral Commission to heed wise counsel and consider alternative approaches to voter registration.
