Former Chief Justice of Ghana, Sophia Akuffo, has voiced her support for the call to review the 1992 Constitution, emphasizing that such a review would empower institutions like the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) to play a more substantial role in fostering development in Ghana.
Speaking at a Constitutional Review Seminar organized by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) in Accra, Sophia Akuffo underlined her belief that the current state of the Constitution limits the NDPC to an advisory role in relation to the government.
She argued that this framework impedes the commission from taking a more active and impactful role in implementing development programs.
Ms. Akuffo stressed that amending the 1992 Constitution to grant the NDPC greater authority to carry out developmental plans is a crucial step in facilitating development across Ghana.
She pointed out that the existing constitutional provisions do not confer the ultimate mandate upon the NDPC to execute development initiatives independently.
