In a swift operation, the Saltpond Police have arrested two sets of couples allegedly involved in a series of robberies within the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.
The incident unfolded on Monday evening when Yaw Boagyan and his three accomplices, two male and two female suspects, reportedly carried out a robbery spree aboard a taxicab with registration number GC-6020-21.
Their crime involved snatching bags from unsuspecting passengers as they traveled along the route from Winneba towards Cape Coast.
However, their nefarious activities came to a halt when they reached Saltpond. Upon reaching a specific location, they snatched yet another bag from a passenger, who managed to cry out for help. Alerted by the victim’s shout, vigilant taxi drivers in the area sprang into action, initiating a pursuit to apprehend the culprits.
In a thrilling chase, the taxi drivers managed to apprehend the suspects and handed them over to the Saltpond Police. The police arrived at the scene and subsequently transported the suspects to the police station for further investigation.
During a search of the suspects, the police reportedly found quantities of drugs suspected to be marijuana in their possession, raising concerns about possible links to other illicit activities.
The arrested individuals, believed to be in their 50s, were identified as Kojo Owusu and Kwame Bempong, while the names of the two female accomplices are yet to be disclosed.
It is alleged that the group has been operating in the region for three consecutive days, targeting unsuspecting victims and making off with undisclosed amounts of money.
As the investigation progresses, the suspects are currently cooperating with the police at the Saltpond Police Station. Authorities plan to present them before the court soon to face charges related to their alleged involvement in the robbery spree.
Residents of Saltpond have commended the swift action of the taxi drivers and the police in apprehending the suspects, expressing relief that the alleged criminals are now in custody and will be held accountable for their actions.
