Parliament passes Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2022 to combat attacks on alleged witches and witchcraft accusations

Parliament has recently approved the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2022, which addresses various issues, including the prevention of attacks on alleged witches.

The bill, introduced by Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, along with four other MPs, aims to put an end to harmful practices related to witchcraft accusations.

One of the key provisions of the bill is the prohibition of individuals from operating as witch doctors or witchfinders.

This measure seeks to curb the activities of those who exploit superstitions and fear surrounding witchcraft for personal gain or to incite violence against others.

Moreover, the law also strictly prohibits the declaration, accusation, naming, or labeling of any individual as a witch.

This provision aims to protect individuals from baseless and harmful accusations, which have often resulted in severe consequences, particularly for women in the northern regions of the country.

Over the years, many women have been subjected to violence, murder, and attacks due to false accusations of witchcraft. The passage of this bill seeks to address these alarming incidents and protect vulnerable individuals from such harmful practices.
