NHIA CEO unveils plan to remove taxes on imported medicines for affordable healthcare in Ghana

Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and a former Deputy Minister of Health, has revealed that plans are in motion to eliminate taxes on imported medicines and raw materials for pharmaceutical manufacturers in Ghana.

The objective behind this move is to reduce the prices of medicines in the country, as the current high taxes on imported pharmaceutical products have resulted in significant price increases.

The exorbitant prices of pharmaceutical products have become a barrier for many individuals seeking access to quality healthcare. Dr. Okoe Boye emphasizes that this situation is discouraging people from seeking proper medical treatment, which poses a threat to their health and well-being.

He added that by removing taxes on imported medicines and raw materials, the NHIA aims to alleviate this burden and make healthcare more affordable and accessible for Ghanaians.
