The Coalition of Ghanaians Without Ghana Card (CGWIG) has accused the government of intentionally misinforming the public about the Ghana Card and using the ECOWAS Card to deny Ghanaians their fundamental right to vote.
During a press conference held in Accra, Richard Kasu, the Convener of the Coalition, emphasized that the Ghana Card is specifically for travel purposes and is distinct from the actual Ghana Identification Card, which the country currently lacks.
He argues that the government should not intertwine the two cards and should stop taking advantage of the public’s ignorance to deprive them of their voting rights.
Mr. Kasu firmly believe that the Ghana Card should not be the sole document required for voter registration, and the government should reconsider its decision, particularly for those Ghanaians who cannot afford the premium registration fee.
Felix Best Agorvi, one of the lead members of the group, further stated that historically, there has never been a requirement for citizens to pay in order to vote.
He finds no logical reason for the government’s initiative to solely use the Ghana Card for voter registration.
He believes that the government should prioritize the welfare of ordinary Ghanaians and refrain from favoring the use of the ECOWAS Card for its own benefit.
