It is better for 99 guilty people to go free than to kill 1 innocent person- Hon. Bernard Ahiafor

The Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee has recommended a significant change to the Death Penalty sentence, proposing that it be amended to Life Imprisonment instead.

This recommendation comes as part of efforts to ensure justice and protect the rights of individuals.

Mr. Bernard Ahiafor, the Ranking Member of the Committee, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the preservation of innocent lives over the execution of guilty individuals.

He expressed that it is preferable for 99 guilty individuals to be set free than for one innocent person to be executed.

Mr. Ahiafor further argued that the continued implementation of the death penalty undermines the country’s commitment to justice and casts doubt on the fairness of the legal system.

He called upon Parliament to carefully consider and pass this bill to bring about positive change.

He also highlighted the fact that Ghanaian Presidents have historically refrained from carrying out executions, indicating that there is already a growing sentiment that the death penalty is unnecessary in the country.
