The recent disclosure of a leaked tape discussing an alleged plot to dismiss the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has sparked a debate within Parliament.

While some Members of Parliament (MPs) believe that the individuals behind the voices on the tape must be identified and held accountable, others argue that the content of the tape is not a cause for significant concern.

Eric Opoku, the MP for Asunafo South, emphasized the urgency of the situation and called for the establishment of a bipartisan committee in Parliament to investigate the tape.

He expressed concern that if the content is not addressed promptly, it could potentially influence actions during the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Contrasting this perspective, Daniel Botwe, the MP for Okere and Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Decentralization, stated that no IGP can single-handedly secure electoral victory for any political party in the country.

He pointed out that even successive IGPs appointed by different administrations have not been able to ensure their respective parties’ retention of power. As a result, he downplayed the seriousness of the leaked tape.

Responding to the discussions, Rt. Hon. Speaker Alban Bagbin has directed the Minister of the Interior to submit an official statement regarding the alleged plot.

The Speaker intends to refer the statement to the appropriate committee for further investigation into the matter.
