The Government has denied allegations of a clandestine scheme to remove the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, prior to the 2024 general elections.
The denial comes in response to a leaked tape that revealed a plot involving a high-ranking police officer and a member of the New Patriotic Party to oust the IGP.
The motive behind the alleged plot is believed to be concerns that Dr. Dampare could hinder attempts to manipulate the outcome of the 2024 elections. However, the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, dismissed these allegations during a press conference in Parliament, urging the public to disregard them as baseless.
Minister Dery emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and independence of the police force throughout the electoral process.
He assured the public that the government has no intentions of interfering with the 2024 elections and is committed to ensuring a free and fair electoral process.
On the other hand, the Minority in Parliament has called on the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the leaked tape, which suggests a plot to rig the upcoming elections following the planned removal of the IGP.
The Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, James Agalga, described the comments in the tape as potentially treasonous and urged the government to take immediate action.
It remains to be seen how the government will respond to these allegations and whether further investigations will be conducted to ascertain the veracity of the leaked tape.
