The Automobile Assemblers Association of Ghana has urged the government, specifically the Ministry of Finance and Trade and Industry, to expedite the implementation of key policies outlined in the Ghana Automotive Development Policy.

During the Inaugural Ghana Automotive Summit, Jeffery Oppong Prah, the President of the Automobile Assemblers Association of Ghana, highlighted the significant progress made in local vehicle production since 2022.

Prah reported a notable increase in local vehicle production, with a total of 4,700 units, accounting for a commendable 9.6% share of the country’s new car market.

To further support the growth of the local industry, the Association is calling for a complete ban on the sale of used vehicles within Ghana.

The rationale behind this proposal is to incentivize the purchase of locally assembled vehicles, fostering investment and job creation within the sector.

Prah emphasized the importance of upholding high industry standards and addressing safety concerns by also advocating for the prohibition of salvaged vehicle sales.

The summit, held under the theme “Creating A New Economic Backbone for Ghana and The Sub-Region,” provided a platform for industry professionals and leading experts to discuss the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in the automobile industry.

In response to the appeals made by the Automobile Assemblers Association, the Minister of Trade and Industries, Kobina Tahir Hammond, expressed the government’s commitment to creating a supportive environment for the industry.
