Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has leveled allegations of vote buying against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Assin North ahead of the upcoming by-election scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, 2023.
According to Mr. Ahiagbah, while the NPP is diligently engaging with constituents and seeking their support, their opponents are allegedly distributing various incentives in the constituency to sway voters.
The by-election was scheduled after the Supreme Court nullified the 2020 election victory of James Gyakye Quason in Assin North.
Quayson’s disqualification stemmed from his dual citizenship, which was found to be in violation of electoral regulations at the time he contested the election.
Contrary to the accusations made by the NPP, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Assin North Constituency has vehemently denied engaging in vote buying by distributing gifts to constituents.
Mr. Martin Apaah, the Communications Officer of the NDC in the Assin North Constituency, refuted the claims and instead pointed fingers at the NPP, alleging that they are the ones involved in such practices.
Apaah emphasized that the voters in Assin North are discerning and not easily swayed by material incentives. He dismissed any notion that the constituents can be compared to those in Kumawu who prioritize instant gratification over the long-term development of their community.
The NDC representative asserted that the people of Assin North prioritize genuine development and will not be influenced by temporary offerings.
