In a workshop organized by the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), the government of Ghana has reiterated its dedication to reducing plastic waste within the country.
Mrs. Lydia Obenewa Essuah, the Director of Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation at MESTI, made this announcement during the workshop.
The primary objective of the workshop is to enhance the capacity of MESTI and selected government institutions in effectively controlling the transboundary movements of plastic waste.
As part of Ghana’s commitment to addressing the challenges associated with plastics, the Ministry of Environment, along with relevant stakeholders, has developed the National Plastics Management Policy, which has been approved by the cabinet.
This policy aims to foster economic growth, create employment opportunities, and protect the environment for sustainable development.
The three-day workshop is a collaborative effort between MESTI, the Basel Convention Coordinating Centre in Nigeria (BCC-Nigeria), and the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions.
It is supported by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad). The workshop seeks to promote the environmentally sound management of plastic waste.
According to Mrs. Lydia Obenewa Essuah, the Director of Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation at MESTI, the workshop serves as a platform for implementing Ghana’s comprehensive strategy to combat plastic waste, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing this critical environmental issue.
