The residents of Manso Tontokrom in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region faced a challenging situation when military officers conducted a raid in the town, allegedly resulting in physical altercations with anyone they encountered.

A group of approximately 50 heavily armed soldiers reportedly arrived in Manso Tontokrom, targeting the local residents in relation to a mining concession dispute.

According to the residents, the community was raided by the military at 1 pm, using seven military vehicles for their operation.

The residents reported that during the military raid, many youth, including women and school children, were subjected to assault. This resulted in injuries for some individuals, while others sought refuge in nearby bushes to escape the violence.

According to the residents, the presence of the military has had a significant impact on the local community, causing teachers, students, and nurses to flee the area. As a result, attendance at schools and health facilities has been significantly affected, with students and teachers absent for several days.

The Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Mark Amponsah, countered the residents’ claims and stated that he has notified the District Chief Executive (DCE) about the situation. He reassured the reporter that efforts are underway to restore peace in the community.

Hon. Amponsah expressed confusion as to why the Ghana Armed Forces would resort to raiding and assaulting innocent individuals without any provocation, especially considering their ability to maintain control over the Asanko Mining Company without such measures.

By bringing this issue to the attention of the DCE, Hon. Amponsah seeks to prompt a response from the appropriate authorities and work towards resolving the conflict peacefully.
