There will be no flooding in Ga West- Ga West MCE assures residents

The Chief Executive for Ga West Municipality, Hon Clement Wilkinson has emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to enhancing sanitation and the drainage system in the area.

According to him, efforts are being made to ensure the free flow of water during rainy seasons. He added that the Assembly is working diligently to address these challenges and improve the overall drainage infrastructure to mitigate the impact of flooding.

Speaking at the tour of inspection on the GARID Projects in the 17 flood-prone Municipalities in the Greater Accra, Hon Clement Wilkinson assures the residents that with this desilting and dredging work, there will be no flooding in the Ga West Municipality.

The Minister’s team inspected GARID Projects in the Ga West, Ga Central and Ga North Municipalities. At the Ga West Assembly, the GARID team saw numerous work done by the Ga West Assembly led by its MCE, Clement Wilkinson.

In addition, Ga North Municipality has also undertaken a demolition exercise in the Ofankor barrier as part of efforts to reduce flooding in the area.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Ga North, Mr. Simons Sekyim stated that this exercise began a few weeks ago to allow water to flow freely and prevent flooding.

Additionally, as part of the GARID Project initiated by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, drains are being cleared of silt to further mitigate the risk of flooding.

These activities, according to him, will continue for approximately two more weeks, aiming to safeguard the area from flooding.

The GARID Project Coordinator, Dr Kwadwo Ohene Sarfoh, expressed satisfaction about how the MMAs are applying for the grant to improve the flood resilience of the city.

He said the desilting and dredging of secondary and tertiary drains in beneficiary communities enable the achievement of quick wins in our quest to enhance the resilience of the city.

The Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Mr Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah also directed Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies in Accra to protect the buffer zone from encroaching.

The Deputy Minister also charged the Assemblies to strictly enforce sanitation regulations and building codes to help curb the incidences of flooding in the capital city.

The Deputy Minister who doubles as a Member of Parliament for Techiman South, Mr Adjei Mensah Korsah charged the Assemblies to pull down structures on the buffer zone to protect human life from flooding.
