Four individuals have been apprehended by the Ghana Police Service in Kupelga, located in the Upper East Region, in connection with a widely circulated video depicting the inhumane treatment of a woman by a group of people.
The suspects, namely Awizore Amolt, Akolbila Asorwogo, Atibila Aladago, and Akolbila Ben, were taken into custody during a Police intelligence operation conducted on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, following an initial investigation into the aforementioned video.
The four suspects are currently assisting with the investigation while being held in Police custody. Concurrently, ongoing efforts are underway to apprehend additional accomplices who will be held accountable for their actions.
In the video, several men were observed forcibly removing the clothing of an unidentified woman, while others proceeded to photograph her intimate areas after spreading her legs wide apart.
The Police have characterized the video as a deplorable act of inhumanity and have called upon the public to remain calm as they strive to apprehend more individuals involved in order to ensure justice is served.
Reports indicate that the assault on the woman was purportedly carried out in retaliation for the killing of a resident in Binaba, located in the Upper East Region, allegedly by nomadic herdsmen.
An eyewitness provided an account of the incident in an interview, stating, “This particular video was recorded in a community called Kupelga, which is near Binaba, in the Upper East Region. The information we have is that on the 30th of last month, a young man was killed in the Binaba community.”
“The community members accused the Fulani herders in the area of being responsible for the death, leading to a large-scale attack on the Fulani herders. The attack on the Fulani herders took place in Binaba, Kupelga, and Zebilla.”
“The day after the attack, which was on the 1st of June, this woman was returning from the market to the Kupelga community when she was assaulted and mistreated by the residents of the Kupelga community,” the eyewitness explained.
The Police have announced their collaboration with the victim’s family to provide her with psychological and emotional support.
