Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Acheampong has announced the need to use a multi-dimensional approach to address issues of child labour in the country.
Speaking at the commemoration of World Day Against Child Labour 2023 which was held at Ntowkrom in the Eastern Region, the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Acheampong announced that child labour is one of the most pressing challenges in Ghana, which deprives children of their fundamental rights.
This year’s celebration was themed “Intensify Action Against Child Labour: Do It Fast, Do It Now.”
He stated that child abuse has deprived most children of a childhood filled with joy and hindering access to education, help, and opportunities that enable them to have a brighter future.
“On this day, we stand united in our commitment to eradicate child labour and build a world where every child can flourish and grow in a safe and nurturing environment,” he said.
He emphasized that the eradication of child labour requires a multi-dimensional approach where laws on social welfare and education will be enforced, and international cooperation will be used to ensure that every child is given a chance to enjoy his or her childhood, pursue his or her dreams, and contribute his or her quota to the development of the country.
“Together, we have to empower our communities to address the root causes of child labour such as poverty, lack of education, and social inequality by investing in education and vocational training such as the Free SHS and TVET,” he added.
This, according to him, “will equip children with the knowledge and skills they need to break away from the cycle of labour exploitation and build a brighter future for themselves and their communities.”
World Against Child Labour Day is an occasion which is observed on the 12th of June each year to raise awareness on child labour and to eradicate child labour in the world.
