Pupils in Denkyira Atobease M/A Basic School in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central Region have escaped snake bites after five snakes invaded their dilapidated classroom during lesson time.
The snake according to a report gathered by Otech FM revealed that the pupils were in the classroom when they saw the snakes at the top of their classroom building.
The snakes fell from the roof and landed on the pupil’s desks which made them run away with the teacher from the classroom.
They seek the assistance of some inhabitants of the community who later came to kill these snakes.
According to some of the pupils, the school has been a playing ground for snakes, scorpions, and other dangerous reptiles as they entered their classrooms by climbing school buildings during class time.
These pupils are now studying in fear and panic as they are afraid the snakes might bite them during class time.
Alongside snake infestation, the school also bemoans about inadequate teachers, classroom furniture, and facilities at both the primary and Junior High levels.
This situation is making teaching and learning very difficult.
The existing situation of the school does not encourage teachers posted there to accept postings and also, does not provide a favorable atmosphere for teaching and learning.
The Chief of the area, Nana Nkwantabesa expressed concern over the lack of qualified school teachers in the community.
He stated that the lack of qualified teachers has left the community no choice but to employ Senior and Junior High School graduates in the school.
He continues by saying that despite the difficulties the school faces, the primary and Junior High School teachers are doing their best to provide the best possible education for the children.
The PTA Secretary of Denkyira Atobease M/A Basic School, Kweku Assem lounged out that the school has always been threatened by snakes and other dangerous reptiles, amidst the poor building conditions of the school.
He stressed that the absence of action from the appropriate authorities would leave the pupils as living sacrifices for these dangerous animals.
Hee is, therefore, appealing to the government, the Municipal Chief Executive and various stakeholders to support the school before matters go out of hand.
